How To Build A WordPress Website

home page exampleIf you want to start out with a site on the Internet without spending any money and have your own .com or (or whatever) domain name, one of the easiest ways is to set up a WordPress Website.

WordPress is a Website creation platform that enables even absolute beginners to create great-looking websites using only free themes (these are templates that govern how your website looks and a customisable to varying degrees, depending on the theme you choose). A WordPress website can be run as a blog with a series of posts or look more like a website with pages. Pictured is the home page of a site I have created with WordPress and which is monetized with adsense and affiliate links.

In addition, there are a whole host of free ‘plugins’ that you add to your website to make it run better, be more search engine friendly (to help your site rank better) and to add features like a ‘contact us’ page or a ‘privacy’ page or even to add buttons to allow your users to ‘like’ your content on Facebook or share it on Twitter or other social media applications. I will be adding videos to this site to show you many of my favourites and how to use them.

If you are run a business and do not have a website, you are missing out on a lot of potential customers by not having your own website. If you do not have time to build your own, or you need some help with design, hosting, management or anything else, why not contact me? I will be delighted to build a WordPress web site for you!

If you want to go ahead and build a site for yourself, you will need to choose and buy a domain name – or rather you rent a domain name because you can only ever secure the domain name you want for a period of time, you cannot ‘own’ it forever. There are lots of places online where you can buy, really the choice is yours and you can pick wherever has the best deal at the time you want to buy.

Next you will need to get yourself a hosting provider who will charge you a monthly or annual fee for hosting your site. The hosting provider stores all your files for your site and ‘serves’ them to the internet so that visitors when they type in your domain name or click on your site when they find it in a search engine search, will immediately get your website on their computer screen. Your choice of hosting provider is very important because a bad provider can have lots of ‘down time’ when your website is not accessible and cannot be found. This is not only extremely annoying, but it is very bad for your business.

Hostgator is my first choice hosting provider, they are not only reputable and extremely reliable, they are also very inexpensive and I have found their customer service amazingly helpful. Their package for unlimited hosting of as many sites as you like costs around $10 a month which is amazing value.
